NSF Developing Septic Tank Protocols, Standards

The NSF Wastewater Technology Joint Committee is developing language to address the design of access ports, a protocol that will establish field performance results for secondary treatment devices serving single-family homes, and is considering a new standard to address septic tank watertightness and structural integrity through an audit program that verifies the manufacturing process.

The committee also is developing a performance standard for reusing onsite effluent. In addition, the group has formed a task group to address certification of technical components and retrofit applications for advanced onsite treatment systems.

Individuals may participate in the Standards and Protocol development process by contacting Sarah Kozanecki at Kozanecki@nsf.org or visiting http://standards.nsf.org/public/stds.
