During Vermont’s SepticSmart Week, the public radio network spoke with Mary Clark, environmental program manager for Vermont's Department of Environmental Conservation, and Dave Whitney, CEO of EcoSolutions, about septic design and maintenance.

It’s not every day that septic systems get this kind of attention, and Clark and Whitney were smart to take advantage of the opportunity to share information and educate listeners. Whether it’s a radio show, classroom presentation for career day, or just one customer at a time, you should seize any chance to share your expertise.

The podcast mentions “Septic Socials” as a way to gather homeowners together to explain in detail how septic systems work and how they’re maintained. These events were started in Maine and Washington, and Vermont picked up the idea. Often, the socials are sponsored by lake associations and one of the homeowners volunteers to open up their onsite system for viewing. The informal setting provides an opportunity to ask questions of the septic and/or water-quality professional.

Vermont's Department of Environmental Conservation has materials available to help plan a Septic Social, including a preparation package with example invitations; an agenda for the event, including talking points for the professionals leading the presentations; the EPA SepticSmart guide for homeowners; and a best management practices fact sheet. View those here if you’re interested in having your own Septic Social.
