I’ve traveled to the Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport Show (formerly the Pumper & Cleaner Expo) for more than a decade, and it just gets better and better as a venue for installers to learn about their industry. The 2016 WWETT Show, running Feb. 17-20 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, offers many ways for you to gain an advantage over your competitors back home. Follow these tips to make it a great – and profitable – experience:

Investigate new advanced systems. Installers are always on the lookout for more efficient, effective and affordable solutions to getting onsite systems approved for challenging sites. The best place to seek out these onsite technologies is the WWETT Show exhibit floor, which boasts 600 vendors using almost 600,000 square feet of floor space. Manufacturers often roll out new products at the show, and they bring along the designers, engineers and sales representatives to explain every component in detail and address your questions about product applications.

Find a diversification play. In an effort to gain additional business from every customer and improve efficiency in the field, more installers are looking at adding a vacuum truck, inspection cameras and other related equipment. The vast array of products on display at the WWETT Show will help you make educated choices for new equipment purchases and open your mind to potential services you’ve never thought about offering. A product you find at the WWETT Show could provide a huge revenue boost for your business.

Spend a day with Jim and Dave. Our own industry experts, Basic Training columnists Jim Anderson, Ph.D., and David Gustafson, P.E., will give a comprehensive program introducing proper practices for sustainable use of onsite treatment systems. You’ll have the unique opportunity of spending an entire day, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19, with the guys at their onsite installer course. This is a convenient opportunity for your newer crew members to get valuable training from these well-known national instructors.

Listen in on some trending topics. I’ve looked over the list of almost 100 education seminars over three days and picked out a few that installers won’t want to miss. They are: “Making Infiltration Decisions – Understanding Soil Surface Design,” with Sara Heger, Ph.D., of the Water Resources Center at the University of Minnesota (11 a.m. Wednesday); “An Exercise in Septic System Troubleshooting,” with Bob Wright and Kim Seipp of the National Association of Wastewater Technicians (1:30 p.m. Wednesday); “The Onsite Wastewater Industry and Our Carbon Footprint,” with Jessica Kautz, of Infiltrator Water Technologies (11 a.m. Thursday); “Inspecting Concrete Sewage Tanks,” with Claude Goguen, P.E., of the National Precast Concrete Association (11 a.m. Wednesday); and “Fact vs. Fiction: The Top Ten Septic Myths,” with Dennis Hallahan, P.E., of Infiltrator Water Technologies (8 a.m. Friday).

Gain perspective through new friends. Small-business owners are always wishing they had a sympathetic ear and advice from another business owner who knows what they’re going through. A solid network of professionals is something you can work on at the WWETT Show. Truth is, many of the best installers in the country gather in Indianapolis every year, and they spend a lot of time talking to one another about major industry issues of the day. One great place to start building that network this year will be the WWETT Show Kickoff Party at Lucas Oil Stadium. Installers will get together on the field at the home of the Indianapolis Colts from 5-8 p.m. on Feb. 17 and 18 for a drink and time to get to know each other. I hope to see you there.

Get in on the fun. Get ready for the biggest party of the year for installers, the WWETT Show Industry Appreciation Party on Friday, Feb. 19. Go to the Sagamore Ballroom at the Indiana Convention Center for 25-cent tap beers, followed by a private show from country music star Jerrod Niemann (“Drink to That All Night”). Meet all your industry friends when the doors open at 5 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m.
