Newly developed free software is available that allows wastewater professionals to generate an owner guide customized for individual client systems.

The program is called the Community Septic System Owner’s Guide and installers can register and use the tool for free by going to http://h2oandm.com.

It works like online tax preparation software, says Sara Heger, who led the project and is a Ph.D. engineer and researcher at the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center. Fill in the required specifications, and the software adjusts for the climate and conditions in that part of the country to generate the guide.

The result is a PDF file that can be shared electronically with customers or printed for them. The average guide is 20 pages long. Stock pictures of a septic tank and other components are available for users, but professionals can enhance a guide with manufacturers’ pictures or even pictures from a particular job.

This tool can be used for a system serving a single-family home or for a cluster system. Installers, designers, pumpers, county sanitarians, public health workers and natural resources department staff will all find this software useful, according to Heger. It will help customers understand and maintain their systems, and it will build better customer relationships, she says.

For more information about the project contact Sara Heger at 612/625-7243 or sheger@umn.edu.
