At HomeField Onsite Environmental, training goes far beyond just teaching people how to pump a septic tank or install a system. And it never ends.

The company, located in Gilbert, Arizona, is a full-service provider of septic services. The staff of 10 includes technicians, salespeople, office and financial personnel, all of whom receive ongoing training. That may involve bringing in outside experts to work with either the whole company or individual divisions, or it may be sending people to conferences, or conducting online training sessions during company meetings.

Each quarter the company has a four-hour Saturday meeting with everyone to talk about issues such as where the company is financially, how the online reputation and reviews are looking, or reviewing new or updated software. They may also bring people in to do personal development training.

In 2024 the company worked with the Blue Collar Success Group, which provided trade-specific training on topics that included how to set up systems and processes for keeping inventory on the trucks, overcoming objections when selling services, and the benefits of creating a positive mindset. “There were a lot of little touchpoints, but they were specific to whatever division they were working with,” owner Tanya Wilson says.

One year the company implemented the Tony Robbins Business Results training program for the whole team. “It was transformational,” Wilson says. “We rented a conference center and did a mini conference for the whole office with a couple of their trainers. It was a big one-day event. It was all about mindset, goal-setting and being really clear and specific on what you want to achieve with your personal and professional life. And then there were online followup meetings once a month for a year.”

Of course the company also provides technical education for everyone in their relevant field, but Wilson believes mindset training is very important. “Everything starts with having the right mindset at the beginning of the day,” she says. “And it’s been awesome to see our team grow with that.”
