Seminars at the 2010 Pumper & Cleaner Expo help installers improve their techniques and apply new treatment technologies

A track of seminars presented by the National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Asso-ciation (NOWRA) highlights the education lineup at the 2010 Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International, Feb. 24-27 in Louisville, Ky.

The NOWRA program is part of Education Day on Wednesday, Feb. 24. The complete program includes 45 seminars presented by experts across the full range of environmental service industries. Seminars also are offered on Thursday and Friday mornings.

A summary of the NOWRA program follows. The presenters are Sara Heger Christopherson, MS, onsite sewage treatment program extension specialist at the Univer-sity of Minnesota, and Tom Fitts, vice president-owner of Residential Sewage Treatment Co. in Grandview, Mo. For a complete seminar schedule, see the Expo pages in this issue of Onsite Installer.

The NOWRA seminar track courses are:

Wastewater Characteristics

Sarah Heger Christopherson

Christopherson will discuss the basic science behind the technology of wastewater treatment and the variable characteristics that influence the methods of treating it.

Soils and Site Evaluation Overview

Tom Fritts

Non-soils professionals will gain a baseline understanding of soil parameters that control treatment efficacy and how to use soil morphology in designing systems. Fritts also will cover landscape description, interpretation of data, and non-soil data for onsite wastewater applications.

Septic Tank Overview: Function, Design, Construction, Inspection and Troubleshooting

Sarah Heger Christopherson

Septic tanks provide an environment that promotes physical settling, flotation, and anaerobic digestion, storing the digested and undigested solids until they are removed. Christopherson’s presentation will help practitioners make informed decisions about wastewater treatment processes, design features that improve tank function and facilitate O&M, and the importance of tank capacity and structural integrity.

Aerobic Treatment Units

Tom Fritts

Fritts will give an overview of the biochemical oxidation of organic compounds, describe various engineered systems, and detail the operation and maintenance required to keep these systems functional.

Media Filters

Sarah Heger Christopherson

Christopherson will highlight the principles of media filters and focus on the effluent quality parameters that may affect design and use. Attendees will learn about packed bed filters and their physical characteristics. They will become familiar with different media and understand why criteria vary with each design. The course also will cover wastewater dosing, distribution, and single-pass versus recirculating systems.

Pumps and Controls

Tom Fritts

Pumps are the heartbeat of pressurized onsite systems. Fritts will provide details on the design, component selection, and configuration of these systems. He will cover the different types of pumps and their associated purposes, pump selection and sizing criteria, and options for controlling pumps with floats and panels.
