Where traditional anaerobic onsite systems clog over time at the hands of biomat, RioVation Suspended Biofilm Generator kits thrive under difficult site conditions, giving old drainfields new life and typically producing clear effluent. The company’s latest product, the BioMaze Commercial Model, delivers the same performance to systems with higher flow demands.

“The product is scalable and can go in any tank, anywhere in the world, and provide an extremely high level of treatment very economically,” says Stephen Moeller, sales professional at RioVation.

The Commercial Model — also known as the BM26510HSC — launched in 2023 and can support flows from 600 to 1,800 gpd, making it a good fit for both commercial and higher-end residential systems not already covered by the residential Model BM2620, which treats flows of 300 to 750 gpd.

While RioVation has not determined an upper limit yet, Moeller says BioMaze can scale substantially to fit the needs of large onsite systems, including a current project in Ghana totaling at 18,000 gpd.

Like the residential BM2624 model, the BM26510HSC converts an existing septic tank into a Suspended Biofilm Generator, using fixed-film media pods to promote microbial growth and a HIBLOW HP-200 linear air pump to create aerobic conditions. Under optimal conditions, drainfields rejuvenate in a few weeks to a few months with BOD and TSS values falling to single digits.

The installation process is simple and designed to fit any tank, Moeller says – single- or multi-compartment and from concrete to fiberglass. While many BioMaze units are easily installed into existing tanks, new installations are not only possible, but conducive to a longer system lifespan.

“If you wait until a system is in failure, there is a risk that it’s going to be more difficult or sometimes impossible to recover. If you let it go too long, you could have other issues compounding the biomat.”

Moeller says BioMaze has been well received internationally, from the Black Belt region to West Africa. Last month, Moeller flew out to Liberia to oversee a 6,000 gpd installation in a tank that failed due to an over-capacity rock trickle filter unable to keep up with treatment, causing odor problems. With a BioMaze Kit, the majority of treatment occurs in the tank, which Moeller expects will ease workloads on the trickle filter and eliminate odor.

“The odor is a big, big issue for them,” Moeller says. “What we’re able to do is go into the existing tank and drive the system with two 5.5 hp regenerative blowers. So it makes it a really attractive, very cost-effective treatment option, even internationally.”
