As the onsite wastewater industry looks ahead to WWETT 2026, the National Association of Wastewater Technicians continues to strengthen the foundation of professional training and certification nationwide.

NAWT’s combined focus on standardized training, hands-on experience and certification tracking is driving professionalism in the onsite wastewater industry. By equipping inspectors, installers and operators with consistent methods and verified skills, NAWT ensures that the public, the regulators and our industry peers can trust the work being done.

This commitment is reflected in the rollout of the new and updated NAWT OWTS Inspection Standards Training class, the updated Installer I training program and the new Installer II training program. As a bonus feature at the 2026 WWETT show, we will be offering the Vac Truck Technician Training Course in addition to our NAWT educational track.

Standardization: Elevating the industry

For decades, inspection methods varied widely, creating inconsistencies in documentation and conclusions. NAWT’s standardized approach provides a repeatable, reliable inspection process that regulators, property owners and real estate professionals can trust.

The newly updated OWTS Inspection Standards Course is a nationally recognized program that equips participants to perform thorough inspections of Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems, including property transfer evaluations, system functionality assessments, and compliance inspections for counties and homeowner associations.

Central to the course is the adoption of NAWT’s OWTS Inspection Standards, which guides inspectors through every system component and help determine an overall system condition. Operating at the Operations Level, the course ensures every part from tanks and pumps to distribution lines are assessed for condition, performance and deficiencies.

“Only through education of the industry members and the public will this industry command the respect it deserves,” says Tom Ferrero, NAWT board secretary. “I have learned a lot by networking with other industry participants rather than considering them as competitors. Hopefully I have shared some of my knowledge with them as well.”

The benefits of this standardization are clear:

  • Professional credibility: Certified inspectors follow a clear, documented methodology
  • Regulatory alignment: NAWT training is recognized as the benchmark for many state and county certifications
  • Consumer confidence: Homeowners and buyers can rely on consistent, high-quality inspection results

WWETT 2026: Hands-on vacuum truck training

WWETT remains the industry’s premier hub for education and innovation. This year, NAWT will feature the Vacuum Truck Technician Training Course, developed with the USEPA, Penn State and the Pennsylvania Septage Management Association.

The one-day program is tailored to current and aspiring vacuum truck owners and operators, combining instructional videos with hands-on exercises using an actual pump truck. Participants gain practical knowledge in:

  • Truck equipment, drive mechanisms and pump-out skills
  • Safety and emergency response procedures
  • Customer interaction and education
  • Regulatory compliance and manifests
  • Materials management and the basics of vacuum and pressurization

This course is ideal for both newcomers and experienced operators seeking a refresher. NAWT offers it live at WWETT and at multiple locations nationwide, as well as online anytime through the NAWT website.

Certification and tracking through the LMS

NAWT’s new Learning Management System enhances the training experience by tracking certification and course completions. Virtual options are becoming available for certain components, allowing flexibility while ensuring accurate records for professional development and compliance.

Stronger through education

NAWT’s leadership in training and certification continues to raise the bar for the onsite wastewater industry. Its emphasis on standardization, hands-on experience and transparent certification tracking not only strengthens technical skills but also builds public trust and professional integrity.

“Education and collaboration are key,” Ferrero adds. “When we share knowledge rather than compete, the entire industry benefits.”

The launch of the OWTS Inspection Standards Course on Jan. 1, 2026 underscores NAWT’s commitment to preparing the next generation of wastewater professionals with the tools, training and integrity needed to advance the industry.
