BioMicrobics RetroFAST
The BioMicrobics RetroFAST septic system is small enough to be inserted directly into a new or existing septic tank through a minimum 18-inch manhole. It is made up of a white liner, several blue media blocks, an airlift device and a remote blower. The oxygenated water supports the growth of useful microorganisms on the surface of the media. These attached-growth microorganisms break down the organic material in the wastewater. The microbial growth on the media surface is sloughed off by aeration. Oxygenated water with low organic content will be delivered to a drainfield, promoting a breakdown of the existing biomat layer, thereby improving soil and drainage. 800-753-3278; www.biomicrobics.com
E-Z Treat Re-Circulating Synthetic Media Filter
E-Z Treat manufactures NSF 350 water treatment reuse applications throughout the United States. The biological-based treatment system Re-Circulating Synthetic Media Filter produces high-quality effluent to accommodate a wide variety of flows for residential and commercial sites, whether subsurface or surface discharge. 703-753-4770; www.eztreat.net
Eljen Geotextile Sand Filter
The Eljen GSF, or Geotextile Sand Filter system, is designed to provide treatment and dispersal in the same footprint with easy installation and minimal maintenance. It is used for commercial and residential applications. Utilizing a two-stage pretreatment process, the geotextile modules apply filtered septic tank effluent to the soil, increasing the soil’s ability to accept effluent and increase the long-term acceptance rate. Its design provides increased surface area for biological treatment that greatly exceeds the module’s absorption area. Open-air channels within the module support aerobic bacterial growth on the module’s geotextile fabric interface, surpassing the surface area required for traditional absorption systems. The system is tested and certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI Standard 40. 800-444-1359; www.eljen.com

All interior components are installed, plumbed and adjusted at the factory. Units can be shallowly buried for use between a functional, watertight septic tank and a functioning drainfield. The three-in-one design includes recirculation, treatment, and discharge in a single unit to simplify installation and eliminate the need for additional tanks, basins, risers and lids. The treatment system can be maintained with an annual service call, and filters and textile media are accessible and cleanable. No blower is needed for the passively vented system. An optional UV disinfection unit is available. 800-348-9843; www.orenco.com
RioVation BioMaze
RioVation BioMaze is a fixed film media treatment technology that combats drainfield issues. The 26-inch tall, 8-inch diameter media and aeration pods install via a riser into the septic tank. These floating, self-positioning pods have retrieval lines for ease of maintenance. The energy efficient HiBlow XP80 air-pump with housing and integrated alarm powering the unit ensures a cost-effective operation. The resulting effluent typically boasts low single digit BOD and TSS, along with reduced fecal coliform and nitrogen levels. It goes beyond typical aerobic treatment to act as a “suspend biofilm generator,” fostering suspended biofilm microorganisms throughout the tank and into the drainfield. The SBG facilitates rapid “forced rejuvenation,” visibly improving drainfield performance within days, in systems plagued with biomat sludge. 352-436-9412; www.riovation.com
Chemicals
Cape Cod Biochemical Jump Start
Jump Start healthy probiotic septic starter from Cape Cod Biochemical is designed to accelerate the health of septic tanks after pumping or new installation. It prevents clogging, sewage backups and odor drafts from septic tanks, reducing organic sludge, grease buildup and slime layers beneath the drainfield, according to the maker. After the septic tank is pumped, add 1 pound to a 500-gallon tank or add 2 pounds to a 500-gallon cesspool. CCLS septic tank treatment should be used monthly per label or at the septic contractor’s recommended dosage. It is safe for the environment when used according to specifications. 800-343-8007; www.septiconline.com

Septic System Bacteria
Bionetix International BIOBOOSTER 1T
When the critical microbial population in a septic system is decimated by the use of root killers or the disposal of bleaches and detergents, septic tank owners can replenish their microbiome with BIOBOOSTER 1T from Bionetix International. Each tablet contains 1 trillion CFU of beneficial bacteria, along with enzyme strains, to speed up the biodegradation of organic materials such as papers, grease and waste. It supports the conversion of floating scum into clear liquid effluent that can be absorbed in the drainage field. It can also reduce pumping frequency by minimizing sludge buildup. Side benefits include reduction of odor and blockages. Use one tablet as needed after a system shock, or apply one tablet per month for maintenance after a two-tablet startup dose. 514-457-2914; www.bionetix-international.com
Jet Inc. Bio Jet 7

Nonhazardous and nontoxic, the supplements are a blend formulated to assist biological activity in septic systems, aerobic wastewater treatment systems, lift stations, lagoons, grease traps and retention ponds. They are effective for difficult startups, daily maintenance to meet system discharge requirements or when a system becomes unstable due to changes in flow, chemicals or increased organics. Continuous use can lead to a significant decrease in odor, maintenance and emergency line blockages. They are available in flushable dry packs or 1-, 5- and 55-gallon containers. 800-321-6960; www.jetincorp.com
Oatey Hercules Septic-Flow
Oatey’s Hercules Septic-Flow is a concentrated liquid designed to improve the overall efficiency of all types of septic and wastewater systems. Containing billions of super active organisms in each ounce, it has the capability to rapidly complete waste degradation. With the ability to perform under a wide variety of conditions, the product performance is not affected by temperature, pH variations and the presence of household cleaners or disinfectants. It is designed to be used on a regular basis to eliminate backups, odors and corrosion. It is available for purchase in 2-quart containers and can be used in septic tanks, cesspools, dry wells, leach tanks and drainfields. Ultimately, it is meant to extend the life of the entire septic system due to its growth characteristics that increase the rate of respiration of existing septic system bacteria, resulting in a faster reduction of organics in the septic tank, allowing for less frequent cleanings and carry-through of specialized bacteria to better maintain a clean and proper flow in the drainage beds. Regular use allows for growth of sulfide-producing bacteria that slows the bacterial digestive process. 800-321-9532; www.oatey.com
Septic Drainfield Restoration
EarthBusterPLUS
An additive is injected into the compressed air and into the soil using the EarthBusterPLUS. The EarthBuster is often used to rejuvenate drain/leachfields by injecting pressurized air into the absorption soil surrounding the leach lines of septic systems. Additives have a limited positive and consistent effect, improving the process in a septic system because the point of adding these additives is at the initial source or the tanks. A more complete process is accomplished by distributing additives throughout the field. In addition, additives are available to enhance soil, such as stimulating microbial activity and water absorption, promoting root development, neutralizing alkalinity, and adding plant nutrients. Currently, these products can only be applied to surfaces or shallow depths. With the EarthBusterPLUS penetrating to greater depths, the additives can condition the soil at root depths. 406-670-8318; www.earthbuster.com
