Every year you hear stories of people suffering serious injury or even death after accidentally falling into septic tanks. Those tragic deaths are almost always avoidable if proper precautions are taken, though. Sim/Tech Filter offers easy-to-install Safety Nets that offer peace of mind to both the technician and homeowner.

According to Darrell Maves, operations manager for Sim/Tech, there are two important differences between Sim/Tech’s net and the other safety devices on the market. “The most important difference is that the majority of the net can remain in place during service,” he says. “There are 12 legs of the net that attach to the riser. Eleven of those have a quick link that can be disconnected to create a larger opening to pull a pump or use a rake during tank cleaning. This means that you only have to remove say a quarter of the protection to pull a pump rather than removing the device completely.”

It is also easy to temporarily reconnect the legs of the net if you have to walk away for a moment during the service call. This way, you are not removing the protection during one of the most vulnerable times, when the lid is removed.

Because the nets are made out of rope, they are adaptable to different sizes of risers. For example, 24-inch nets are designed to fit any riser with an inside diameter of 24 inches or less. “Say you have a 22-inch plastic riser, our 24-inch net will work for that,” says Maves. “Or maybe you run into an old concrete riser that has an uncommon dimension like 19 1/2 inches; our net will work with that. We offer various sizes to work for openings up to 48 inches in diameter.”

The safety nets were first products to protect children and pets, but also with the intention of protecting the installers and service companies from liability as well as limiting the amount of interference that a safety device could cause during service. They work for most any tank access, so not only do they apply to septic tanks, pump chambers and ATUs, but also water storage tanks, cisterns and stormwater basins. The hardware that installs on the inside of the riser is 316 stainless and the rope is polypropylene, so they are corrosion-resistant.

“We have been pushing this safety issue long before most if not all our competitors,” says Maves. “Sadly, it has not been until recently when more areas are beginning to require devices that we have really seen interest increase.”
