No matter how much planning goes into a job, sometimes the site has other ideas. Here are five ways the job site can turn against you — and how to fight back.
1. Mud Traps
That solid-looking ground? Turns out, it’s a hidden swamp. Equipment sinks, boots disappear, and suddenly, getting out is the real job.
How to fight back: Test the ground first — probe it, look at recent weather patterns, and use mats or geotextile fabric in questionable areas. If you do sink, plywood, tow straps or a winch can help get things unstuck.
2. Rock Solid Problems
You start digging, only to hit what feels like a prehistoric boulder. Now, it’s either bring in a breaker or reroute.
How to fight back: Call 811 before digging to avoid surprises. If rock is unavoidable, consider hydraulic breakers, rock saws, or even blasting (if regulations allow).
3. Hidden Junkyards
You’re trenching, and suddenly, an old car bumper, tree stump, or even a buried tank shows up. Who knew you’d be doing excavation and archaeology?
How to fight back: Check old site maps if available. If unexpected debris appears, assess if it’s hazardous (think old fuel tanks) and have a disposal plan ready.
4. Wasp Nests and Wildlife
Nothing makes a crew scatter faster than an angry swarm of wasps — or worse, a snake hiding in the trench.
How to fight back: Keep an eye out for nests in trees, old equipment, or even underground. A can of wasp spray is a job site essential. For bigger critters, keep your distance and call professionals if needed.
5. The Weather Switch-Up
Forecast says clear skies, but suddenly, you’re in a downpour — or worse, a full-blown storm turns your trench into a swimming pool.
How to fight back: Always have a backup plan. Quick tarps, sump pumps and trench boxes can help control damage. And if conditions get dangerous, know when to call it for the day.
