A robust biomat of naturally occurring, nitrifying bacteria attaches to this media, aggressively breaking down BOD and TSS. Because the bacteria are firmly anchored to the media rather than suspended freely in the liquid, the system naturally resists sudden hydraulic surges or the occasional “toxic shock” from harsh household cleaners.
