Kyle Nix prefers plastic septic tanks for many onsite installations in his company’s south central Indiana territory.

Nix, president and chief operating officer of S&M Nix Enterprises based in Depauw, likes the tanks for their ease of handling and finds them suitably durable for a wide range of projects. He uses mainly tanks from Infiltrator Water Technologies and AK Industries.

IM Series tanks from Infiltrator come in working capacities of 278, 552 and 1,094 gallons. The two smaller units are suitable mainly as pump tanks, while the larger version (IM-1060) can be used as a septic tank, pump tank or rainwater tank in shallow, multiple and serial configurations.

The IM-1060 is designed to be lightweight (320 pounds) yet strong and durable. It is watertight and is offered with the company’s custom-fit risers and heavy-duty lids. The tanks are 62.2 inches wide, 127 inches long, and 54.7 inches high. Burial depths are 6 inches minimum and 48 inches maximum.

The tanks are made from injection molded polypropylene. Inboard lifting lugs enable easy delivery and handling. The two 24-inch access ports are structurally reinforced to eliminate distortion during installation and pumpouts. Reinforced structural ribbing and fiberglass bulkheads add strength.

No special installation, backfill or water filling procedures are required. The tanks can be backfilled using suitable native soil. They are delivered fully assembled and are available through a network of certified distributors.

AK Industries offers both standard and heavy-duty tanks in six capacities from 300 to 1,500 gallons. Weights range from 135 to 600 pounds (standard) and 180 to 675 pounds (heavy-duty). The tanks are made of high-grade polyethylene and are delivered as one-piece systems, pre-plumbed and ready to install. An engineered rib design provides strength.

Tanks are available with dual compartments. Standard tanks have a maximum bury depth of 24 inches to the top of the tank; heavy duty tanks, 48 inches. No water or gravel backfill is necessary. Tanks can be installed with native, free-flowing soil.
