Truck Stop Saves Money on High Strength Wastewater System

A nationally operated and well-known gas station and convenience store chain required an onsite wastewater treatment system at a smaller, remote location in Colorado. The store required a treatment system capable of treating the typically high-strength wastewater generated from food and beverage service in addition to what is generated from high-traffic restrooms for highway travelers. The challenge faced by this and many similar facilities around the country is to find a cost-effective treatment system that can reliably meet performance requirements long-term.

The design engineer for the facility found a solution using a combination of the BioMicrobics LIXOR and HighStrengthFAST systems. Wastewater from the facility passes through a primary septic tank into a flow equalization tank, where it is then dosed on a timed basis to a LIXOR 1.0 aeration system. The LIXOR reduces the incoming BOD by up to 50%, with the remainder of the BOD and TSS load handled by the HighStrengthFAST 4.5 system at the next stage of the process. The effluent is then collected and dosed to the drainfield. The LIXOR aeration system helped reduce the overall capital cost of the project. Using the simple, nonclogging submerged LIXOR aerator before the main treatment process cut down the size of the required treatment unit by half while providing a robust treatment capacity for waste with a BOD concentration in excess of 1,000 mg/L.
